The R. H. Bearden Elementary School Quest Gifted Enrichment Program
students visited the Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson on Friday, March 22,
2024. This was their first visit to the capitol and they were very excited. They
were greeted by the tour guide and moments later Representative Rosebud as
they entered the building. Representative Rosebud shared the entire educational
moment with the students. He took them to where he sits as the representatives
meet. One of the first and most noticeable things on his desk was the beautiful
picture of his wife, Mrs. Nicole Harris Rosebud. He explained to him some of his
duties and what takes place in the area. It was indeed a privilege for the group to
be able to enter the area.
The kids had so many questions for the tour guide and Representative
Rosebud. He explained to the students how important it is to get their education.
He encouraged them to do their best and to realize the possibility of them one
day being a Representative or maybe even the governor. Two parents trailed the
bus and participated in this experience as well. There were conversations
between the parents and Representative Rosebud as well.
The students were amazed as they attempted to calculate from the number
of lights to materials used to make the structure of the building. Each floor of the
capitol was a learning moment.
Representative Rosebud treated the students, chaperones, bus driver as
well as the parents to a delicious meal at Mama Hamlins. He conversated with
the group during their meal. The students were well-mannered and enjoyed their
meal. The ice cream was their favorite.
The students later were joined by Mr, Brian Washington. He talked to the
kids and told them that they had met his wife , Representative Grace Butler
Washington also while at the capitol. He gave the students a token and gave
them encouraging words as well.
Also while eating, a highway patrolman (lady) stopped by the table and
talked to the students for a while. The people at Mama Hamlins were impressed
with the students’ behavior. We were so proud of them. Ms Rebecca Kennedy
and Mr. Jermyron Rice were the perfect chaperones.
Again, a special thanks to Representative Rosebud. He says that its not
about the money for the meal nor the amount of time he spent with them. His
main concern was the kids learning about what they can be. He wanted them to
realize the uniqueness within themselves. Representative Rosebud says that he
hopes that he has touched their lives in a meaningful way. He believes that these
experiences can add motivation to all students. We were already talking about
the students’ next visit. Thank you Representative Rosebud for everything.
